We are excited to have you join the SHS Band program!  It is our distinct honor to have you be a part of our experience with this amazing group of young people, their parents, and our program instructors.  The Summerville Band has known a long and rich heritage of success and a respected place in SC band history.  We have been handed a bright torch, burning for more than 50 years in the community, and we believe that it is our responsibility to send it to future generations with the same dignity and quality with which it came to us.

We hope you are able to find answers to questions you may have here on our website.  This page is designed to give you an overview of the program and its many moving parts and to show you the steps to becoming an active member of our organization.

What programs do we offer students?

The Summerville Symphonic Band: our ensemble for the most advanced wind and percussion students, focusing on grade V and VI literature.  Assignment to the Symphonic Band is by audition and/or teacher recommendation.

The Summerville Concert Band: our ensemble for developing students on track to be in the Symphonic Band, focusing on grade III, IV, and V literature.

Chamber Ensembles: Chamber Ensembles such as flute choir, horn quartet, saxophone choir, brass choir, percussion ensemble and other combinations of instruments in small groupings are a staple of the wind and percussion experience.

The Lesson Academy: our availability of private lesson study teachers during the school day. It's a known fact that students who study privately often advance more quickly and have more audition success.

The Summerville Competitive Performance Ensemble: our  marching band.  Membership is by audition.  All students are expected to participate in the marching program on some level.  Students who do not march in the competitive ensemble will still be a part of the Friday night HOME GAME band in the stands, etc.

Summerville Percussion: students in the percussion studio are required to participate in marching band.  This ensemble is the percussion section for the marching band in the fall and focuses on advanced percussion literature as well as participating in the Concert & Symphonic Bands in the Winter and Spring.

The Open Winter Guard: These are our most advanced and accomplished color guard students.

The Cadet and/or Scholastic A Guard: our color guards for developing students on track to be in the Open Guard.

NOTE: All students who participate in the color guard units in grades 9-12 MUST be enrolled in a color guard class.

Jazz Ensemble: This group is rehearsed completely outside the school day or at lunch during the 2nd semester.  It is open to Saxophones, Trumpets, Trombones and Rhythm Section with supplemental instruments as needed.

Leadership: Students who show promise and wish to develop leadership skills and are selected to the Leadership Team.
