There is also a place to pay for the audition under the "PAYMENTS" tab on this website.

Woodwind and Brass auditions are comprised of the following:

  • Major Scales:  Students must perform their required major scales in 2 minutes or less.

  • Chromatic Scale:  Students perform the chromatic scale covering the full range of their major scales at the prescribed tempo.

  • Required Solo: These etudes may be downloaded and printed and copied and do not involve any copyright permission.

  • Sightreading: Students will have 30 seconds to study each of two examples and then perform them for the judges.

  •  Terms: Students will be asked to select the appropriate definitions of 5 musical terms, multiple choice.

  • Tone:  The beauty and versatility of the sound quality produced throughout the audition comprise xx% of the score.

Percussion auditions are comprised of the following:

  • Technical Proficiency: The mastery with which students perform rudimental/scale requirements.

  • Required Solo: These etudes may be downloaded and printed and copied and do not involve any copyright permission.

  • Sightreading: Students will have 30 seconds to study each of two examples and then perform them for the judges.

  • Overall Technique: This is the equivalent to the wind player's tone score.  The technique score will be given at the end of the audition and will reflect the student's overall level of sound quality and general approach to performing.

Percussion students must choose to audition on either snare/mallets OR timpani. NO student, whether winds OR percussion, may audition on more than one instrument (snare/mallets go together as one.)

Audition Material PDF's

Where can you find the required audition materials?  Click Here for SCBDA Audition Requirements and Resources. Mr. Gilreath or Mr. Shiverdecker will have to access your required solo.  Students do not have direct access to that.

Audition Required Solo Recordings

Where can you find recordings of the required solos?  The University of South Carolina Music Faculty record the All State Solos every year and post them with instructional materials, comments and stylistic considerations.  Click Here for the USC All State Band Recording Project.

Be sure you are listening to the correct solo!

Students who audition and are chosen but do no attend the performance clinic/rehearsals may not be allowed to audition again in the following year per SCBDA policy.
